Chip Hailstone is an American reality tv star famous for the BBC produced documentary series “Life Below Zero”. The show was about people living in Alaska taking about their daily struggles and explain the different techniques they use to survive in a sub zero degree environment.
Chip (full name – Edward V Hailstone) was born on March 1969 in Kalispell, Montana. His father, Daniel Hailstone, taught him various survival skills such as fishing, hunting and craft making which he would need later in life.
At the age of 19, Chip first set foot in Alaska. His visit was meant to be transient but since he liked the place so much he ended up staying there indefinitely. He ended up settling near Kobuk River in Noorvik and started his lifestyle of hunting animals such as seals, walrus etc. He married an Alaskan native named Agnes who from the Alaskan tribe known as the Inupiaq. They have been blessed with five daughters by the names Qutan, Caroline, Tinmiaq, Mary and Iriqtaq. In addition to these, Agnes has two older sons named Doug and Jon Carer from a previous relationship.
The whole family chose to star in the reality tv series “Life Below Zero” after their lifestyle caught the attention of BBC producers. The show looks at the everyday life of the hunters in remote towns in Alaska and their struggles with extreme weather conditions. The series has won a total of 4 Primetime Emmy Awards and multiple nominations.
In 2017, Chip Hailstone was unfortunately imprisoned at the Anchorage Correctional Complex and handed a 15 month sentence and 3 years of probation. He was convicted of two counts of perjury and a count of providing false information after a reported altercation between an Alaskan trooper and his daughter Tinmiaq. The family has to continue with the show without him for the entire 10th season. His wife said that survival was much harder without her husband but she was able to push through.
After completing his sentence, Chip returned to the show while still under probation.
